The first edition of the Ahmedabad World Schools Debating Tournament was conducted from the 6th of January to the 8th of January, by the ARC Foundation in association with the Indian Schools Debating Society at GNLU. The three day event was held as part of the preliminary process for selection to the Indian National Debating Team that represents the country at the World Schools Debating Championship every year. The Ahmedabad World Schools Debating Tournament saw participation from 16 schools across the city taking part in this format of debating for the first time. Speaking on a number of issues- ranging from the use of euthanasia and the associated ethical issues, to the validity of negotiating with terrorists- the fact that they were beginners did not pose an obstacle to them delivering fantastic speeches and making arguments with ease. This was made possible with the help of the training provided by Abhilaksh Sharma from ARC Foundation along with Arjun Vignesh and Sudarshan from ISDS, all of whom are national level debaters.
At the end of 3 preliminary rounds of debating- JG International School, Divine Child International School, Anand Niketan Satellite Campus and Prakash Higher Secondary School qualified to the semifinals, with Anand Niketan and Divine Child International facing off in the finals. In what was a closely contested debate, Anand Niketan School, Satellite was ultimately declared the champions of the first edition of this tournament.
The top 12 speakers from the tournament were part of a comprehensive training workshop, with the most promising students being sent to the national selections held in April 2017
