The 7th of October saw more than 40 children from all across Gujarat participate in one of the region’s biggest debating tournaments. This was the Gujarat regional rounds from which the top speakers will be filtered to participate in the all-India tryouts, to be held to select the Indian national debate team to the World Schools Debating Championships 2018 to be hosted in Croatia. Organised by A Responsible Citizen (ARC) Foundation in partnership with the Indian Schools Debating Society at J.G.International School, Ahmedabad, the weekend started with a workshop by trainers Chandrasekhar Sriram, former WSDC Team India alumni, together with Ronit and Sudarshan, among India’s best university debaters. This was accompanied by two rounds of incredibly competitive and high-quality debating, on topics from whether we should institute compulsory military to whether free trade has harmed or benefited the developing world. The finalists of the tournament were the team from Divine Child International School and the team from Rachana School, with the trophy being taken home by the team from Divine Child International . Further, the top 12 speakers from the tournament made it to the next leg of selections on 9th October, from which the candidates for national tryouts were filtered.
